You Have the Power
Personal power and Personal Currency
by Apollo Ubani
If a person has dignity, has retained his or her dignity, and/or has
not had it taken away or traded it for something in this world then
that person has some degree of “personal power.” Personal power
is critical to activism, change, and participation. Although personal
power is related to self esteem and confidence it is separate and
not necessarily dependent on either.
Personal power is the individual sense of worth, command of what
he or she feels, believes, knows to be “right”, and the request for
what is right when he or she exercises it. It is one’s ability to
express, reject, or demand something. It is ones individual drive
and behavior to seek recognition, remedy, recompense,
reconciliation, remittance, and respect. Everyone has or had it in
our lives and the ones of us that have not been beaten down by life
still have it. We’ve had it since the first act of defiance as a toddler. It
is a key component of who you are and essential to your acts of
honor, sacrifice, valor, challenge, courage, and activism.
One’s personal currency is what we trade on to acquire the results
and solutions that we seek. It is directly tied to one’s honesty,
integrity, believability, and one’s history and record thereof, both by
word and deed. Personal power is the foundation of personal
currency and what drives it or weakens it. One’s personal currency
is not to be taken lightly or traded frivolously. Word is bond. No
word, no bond; No personal currency, no personal power. No
personal power, no personal currency.
