Sea Change
Long before anyone ever heard of immigration
reform, back when Asians were reviled by a
portion of the dominant social group in the
United States, one person challenged the
immigration system. His name was Won Kim
Ark. Never could he have imagined the “sea
change” that the U S is now undergoing in
immigration and so many other areas.
More focus, discussion, and efforts are not just
in the area of immigration, but in all areas of
equality and justice. A series of events, some of
them ugly, sad, and even tragic, has sparked an
important discourse. Some believe a revolution
is at hand. And those of us living now are
witnesses to it all. But which ones will be willing
and active participants in positive change?
What it takes
What it takes to see ourselves through this
period as agents of change is resolve, grit,
determination, vision, humility, purpose, and
understanding. There are things those of who
are acting and will act must do so responsibly
to affect change. But there are instances where
everything that could be done by agents of
change on a particular issue has been done.
When we have served one another and our
communities and country in a spirit of love and
commitment to our common interests and
goodness, we must simply “stand”; Not aside,
not down, not back, but stand. And allow the
momentum of our effort and kindness and
concern for each other to work its magic.
For this change to come full circle what we
need to there is:
Eliminate tyranny and bullying as the basis for
power.
End discrimination of every kind in our lifetime.
Distribute wealth and access and resources.
Stop greed.
Change the criminal justice systems, laws, and
courts.
Replace the policies, systems, and construct(s)
of inequality.
Expose and end White Privilege and all
concepts that divide.
Ensure that elected officials are accountable
and transparent.
Change law enforcement and all power and
authority models.
Respect other cultures; Their language,
customs, icons, cinema, literature, traditions,
and roles models are their own.
Why now?
Why now? There are many possibilities known
and unknown that could be factors or the
driving force(s) behind the changes the nation
and the world is undergoing. People are
becoming awakened by the acts and behaviors
and events that are happening in the U S and
worldwide. Every civilization in history has
known times like these, and perhaps, maybe it
is just time.
History is fraught with “before” and “after”
moments in time and place. But so many things
have aligned, both repugnant and beautiful,
that has become the collective force that is
pulling all of us along to a destination to be
determined,
Violence must end
The aggression and violence that people have
been expressing, and experiencing both under
the color of authority and as private citizens
undermines the good work being done, stalls
progress, and fosters more pain, suffering,
regret, fear and distrust and mistrust.
The conditions that perpetuate the endemic
circumstances that causes gangs and gang
violence, the desire to medicate by using drugs,
the need for commerce by any means
necessary, and the lack of resources and access
that create ghetto conditions and the
frustration, projection, contempt, confusion,
and rage that grows and lives there must end.
The lack of training, proper and thorough
screening, and the support and reinforcement
that law enforcement desperately needs, along
with a change in attitude regarding what law
enforcement is, means and the aspects that
are old, outdated models of operational
procedure must change. The proliferation of
guns in the possession of dangerous civilians
must be ended…Love, peace, and “community”
expanded.
